Fort Pierce area
The history of Fort Pierce began in the 1800's when the U.S. Government set up a fort near what is the downtown area. It was named after Colonel Benjamin Pierce who was the brother of President Franklin Pierce. One of the oldest buildings still standing in current day downtown is the P.P. Cobb Building which was built as a general store back in the 1880's. Several of the homes in the Edgartown area and other areas are survivors from the 1930's and have been renovated for modern use.

The Sunrise Theatre was originally built in 1923 and served Fort Pierce until the 1980's when it
was shut down. In the late 1990's, Main Street Fort Pierce, an organization affiliated with the Chamber
of Commerce began its long journey to get the theatre renovated. Their efforts were rewarded in
January 2008 when the theatre reopened with its first show featuring Dionne Warwick.

The Historic Arcade Building was first built in 1926 and served as the shopping mecca for the
entire region as a forerunner to the modern shopping mall. It survived a fire in the 1950's, but another
more serious fire in the 1980's shut it down for good ... or so locals thought. Along came Bob Brackett
who had completed amazing renovation projects throughout the area, and he took on the daunting
project of renovating this former landmark. Well, it all came together in 2002 when the "new" Arcade
Building opened for business once again. It features wonderful retail space on the first floor, and it
has very nice office space on the second floor as well as in an adjacent three story building at the
northwest corner of the complex.

she lived in the area.
